A COMPANY WITHOUT EXTRA EXPENSES AND WITHOUT LUXURY FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE BUYER

Dear Sir:

The old company of Juan de Miguel (Succesors of José María Celda) takes into consideration the actual situation of the Spanish clergy and tries to help them as they do not have the same resources as before and has started the production of a silk hat of finest quality at the price of 21,95 pesetas for the benefit of numerous and distinguished customers.

In spite of the low price, this economical hat is not manufactured like those offered to the market by others, at much higher prices, and made of silk and other old materials used by others, which can be dangerous for health and the crown made of cardboard. These hats give a very poor result even if the outside look is magnificent.

All our hats are manufactured from first class materials, bought from the most important companies around the world and made especially for us in order to be used specifically for the object at which we are aiming.

The plush of all the hats is woven from natural silk and the crowns of the hats are of  felt, lacquered fabrics or straw and manufactured in our premises.

There are many hats manufacturers which have disappeared after some few years. The only company which still exists is ours, with 30 years of existence, being now the most important and the oldest in Spain and the one which offers the best guarantee as proved as proved by many years of business.

Today when the economical situation is worset than ever,

Spanish Solideo for a Cardinal

Very nice pileolus (solideo, zucchetto) made for a cardinal
Made out of red fabric with moiré-effect (the moiré is rather visible in my pictures)

A very nice detail:
On top, the bottom of the stem is trimmed with a stitched ring.

This pileolus is rigid (stiff) and the lining is a thin sheep leather.
The sheep leather will avoid ugly stains on the (inner) fabric caused by the human sweat.

To get a better fitting on the head, inside is a small band of burgandy velvet.

Hats worn by Franciscans at the Spanish Missions in California

During my visit of the Franciscan establishments along the California Mission Trail I saw at the museum of  the mission in Santa Barbara the following hat:

The museum of the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia exhibits:

These hats are similar to the cappello romano (saturno) with two exeptions:
- the crown is cylindrical with a flat top (not spherical)
- the hat has a wide brim

The wide brim reminds of a sombrero, a hat worn to protect the wearer against strong sunlight. Franciscan friars in California are exposed strong sunlight, especially during summer time.
Maybe the black color was worn during winter and whit during summer (to achieve a better reflection of the sunlight)?

To recognize them as catholic priest they used the typical hat cord with two tassels.
The tassels are typical f.e. for the Chapéu de Raia, too.

In this context, some paintings/drawings out of the book of Leonce Angrand:
