A professional Cantor told me that the official name is a mitre, but since that has Christian connotations Jews would use Yiddish names for it like “a Chazzan’s Kapel”, Chazzan’s Yarmulkeh, Chazzonisheh Yarmulkeh (all meaning ‘Cantor’s Skullcap’), or “Hoiche Yarmulkeh” (high/tall Yarmulka).
What is the Hebrew name for the Cantor's Yom Kippur hat?

Does the Chazzen's Kapel have to be white on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur or is black also acceptable?
ReplyDeleteIt would be better if it is white to honor these high festive days. But it is not a must.
